Mixed Number and Improper Fraction Scavenger Hunt
Improper Fractions To Mixed Numbers With Pictures Worksheet has been popular and thus I decided to create a fun game for students who need more practice on this.
My students love scavenger hunt, and so I decided to start off with this game. Let me know if you want another format (i.e. board games) for this math skill!
Learning how to identify mixed numbers and improper fractions with picture models can make introducing this new math skill easier. Students can start by counting the parts and visualizing what mixed number and improper fraction really means.
Here’s how this scavenger hunt works:
- Students will solve the task card which brings them to the next task card.
- Students will write down the solution and the corresponding letters associated with each task card on the recording sheet.
- Once they’ve gotten all the 9 letters, they will unscramble them to reveal the mystery word – sports related word.
The sports-related terminology might be unfamiliar to them, offering a great opportunity to introduce them to the sport.
Do provide hints such as giving the first letter, or playing hangman by guessing the placement of letters in sequence.
Alternatively, you can encourage them to research and find the answer themselves.

There are 4 Types of activity sheets (20 worksheets):

How It Works
Students will get to do the math and paste the circle pieces inside the ball so that the hat still looks nice on the outside. But if you wish to showcase the questions done, students can paste it around the headband too.
The circle pieces are designed so that they can fit on one side of the ball if placed nicely. But if it is hard to do so, simply ask students to make use of all the white space (i.e. the back of the flap).
But since 1 set of circle pieces can technically fit one side, you can ask your students to do 2 sets for 1 math craft.
Alternatively, since the inside of the ball flap is empty, you can actually make use of the space for other subjects or topics.
Here are some ideas:
- Come up with your own questions and let students write it inside.
- give them a ball related word problems for them to copy it down and solve inside.
- Ask them to research ball related math facts and write it down.
- Write a number that they associate with the sport. Then write down the explanation.
- Ask them to draw a famous sportsperson of that particular sport.
