This blog post will introduce you to the 5 Primary 5 Fraction word problems students need to know to be successful.
I will take the examples from Word Problems On Fractions to show you.
Mixed Operations
Among all the primary 5 fraction word problems, this is one of the simplest.
However, it is frequently one of the most commonly made errors.
Students will just try to make the denominator of two fractions the same. They forget or didn’t realize that we should not do so if the fractions are of different items.
Here is an example.
Equal To Concept
This concept is actually built upon the comparison model, a movement from concrete to abstract way of solving the question.
Students can still use the model to solve similar types of questions, but sometimes when the numbers get bigger, it is a bit cumbersome. And that’s why I encourage my students to shift from model drawing to restating.
Remainder Concept 1
To start with, you can first introduce this question with the fraction of the remainder that just fit. For instance the example shown below, if the remainder left 3 units, you are finding just â…“ of the remainder.
This is the basic remainder concept that students need to understand.
Once students learn how it works, you can move on to a question where students need to regroup the remainder and cut it to different parts.
Remainder Concept 2
This is another variation of the remainder concept. Some teachers use the branching method, an abstract way, to solve it.
I did teach both methods to my students but in the end I still lean towards the model way to solve the question.
Higher Order Remainder Concept
This concept has become more popular in recent years.
