If you or your students need help in drawing models to solve multiplicative word problems, here are the strategy to master them: Learn them, expose to a variety of questions, and lastly, practice them repetitively.
As a teacher, I hope students will be able to understand the relationships between variables with bar model, tape diagram, or strip diagram.
However, sometimes students have problems drawing the model. They feel they need to know how to do the question to draw the model. And now, the model became part of the solution they need to figure out instead of a tool for them to have a better understanding of the question.
Thus, it is important to emphasize to students that models are tools for them to understand the question. Models can be a great visual representation of word problems.
Here’s a video by LearnZillion that you can use to teach/learn the concept.
